Types of Small Groups

At my school, as I have mentioned in previous posts, teachers typically use guided reading groups as their form of small groups in their classroom. As we move into more professional development on implementing a reader’s workshop in our classrooms, we also have been introduced to a variety of small group types. These may still include guided reading groups but also include strategy groups and conferring. Videos are a great way to model support instruction on a particular topic in professional development because it shows the teachers (learners) what this looks like and sounds like. I have found a few videos to use when teaching about the variety of small group types.

Strategy Groups:

Conferring: Research-Decide-Compliment-Teach Conference

Conferring: Coaching Conference

Conferring: Compliment Conferences

When choosing videos to use for professional development, it is really important to include a variety of grade levels. All of the videos I chose were from Jennifer Serravallo who is the author of The Reading Strategies Book that I included in my top 10 literacy books!
